A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such medications need to be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to original weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
